LAS BUITRERAS β PATAGONIA’S FINEST SEA-RUN BROWN TROUT FISHERY
Las Buitreras is one of the most prestigious sea-run brown trout fisheries in the world. Set on the lower reaches of the Rio Gallegos in Patagonia, Argentina, this private stretch of river produces sea-trout of exceptional size and condition β fresh from the Atlantic Ocean and running with the aggression that only ocean-run fish possess. Access is strictly limited, beats are managed to the highest standard, and the fishing is some of the most technically demanding and rewarding in the Southern Hemisphere.

THE FISHERY β RIO GALLEGOS SEA-RUN BROWNS
The Rio Gallegos rises in the Patagonian steppe and flows east to the Atlantic Ocean. Sea-run brown trout enter the river from the ocean and migrate upstream, growing to extraordinary size on the abundant food sources of both salt and fresh water. Las Buitreras controls a premium private stretch β carefully managed beats with exclusive access and guides who know every riffle, pool and lie with the intimacy that only years on the water produces. Typical fish range from 5 to 15 lbs, with exceptional specimens exceeding 20 lbs landed most seasons.

THE FISHING β WHAT TO EXPECT
Las Buitreras is primarily a wet fly destination β swinging large streamers and classic sea-trout patterns through holding lies. The Patagonian wind is a constant presence and demands competent casting. Dry fly fishing is also available during certain conditions β surface takes from fish of this size and aggression are among the most heart-stopping moments in fly fishing.
- Primary technique: Downstream wet fly swinging β classic sea-trout tradition
- Secondary technique: Dry fly during evening rises and low-light conditions
- Rod: 9-foot 8-weight to 9-weight β capable of casting large flies in Patagonian wind
- Flies: Large traditional wet flies, Patagonian streamers, dark Woolly Buggers, surface poppers for dry fly sessions
