Christmas Island (Kiritimati) has long been regarded as one of the premier flats fishing destinations in the world. Located 1,344 miles south of Honolulu and just 120 miles north of the equator, Kiritimati has an incredible year-round fishery completely unaffected by weather and seasons. The sheer diversity of species makes it unique — and the fishing genuinely delivers on the reputation.

THE LODGE — FACILITIES & ACCOMMODATION

Christmas Island Lodge — formerly the Captain Cook Hotel, completely renovated and reopened in August 2023 — is located on the island’s north shore, just a short distance from Cassidy Airport. The lodge provides private boat access to the inner lagoon, only 2.5 kilometres south on the northern edge. This means guests are consistently among the first anglers on the water each morning.

GETTING THERE — TRAVEL LOGISTICS

Kiritimati is serviced by one Fiji Airways flight per week, operating between Honolulu (Nadi) and Christmas Island, departing and arriving on Tuesdays. All fishing packages run Tuesday to Tuesday — 7 nights / 6 days. From Australia:

• From Brisbane or Sydney: Fiji Airways to Nadi (Fiji), then onward to Christmas Island — total travel time approximately 8–10 hours
• Note: Purchase return flights well in advance. The single weekly flight fills quickly during discount periods.
• Travel insurance: Strongly recommended — the single weekly flight means any disruption has significant consequences. See sidebar for details.

BOOKING TERMS — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

• 50% non-refundable deposit required within 14 days of reservation to confirm booking
• Full payment due 90 days prior to your trip date
• Cancellation policy: Christmas Island Lodge will work to rebook within 12 months; deposits retained if not rebooked within that window
