Why Christmas Island?

WHY FISH
CHRISTMAS ISLAND?

Christmas Island (Kiritimati) is widely regarded as one of the most productive and accessible saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world. Located in the Central Pacific Ocean — just 120 miles north of the equator — this remote coral atoll offers vast hard-bottom flats, crystal-clear water, and an extraordinary density of fish.

Unlike many flats fisheries that require extensive boat travel or highly technical presentations, Christmas Island provides consistent opportunities for wade fishing, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced anglers.

🐠
Unmatched Bonefish Numbers
Anglers regularly encounter dozens of fish per day in shallow water — some of the highest densities on earth.
🦺
Accessible Wading
Hard coral flats allow for safe and productive walk-and-wade fishing — no boat required for most species.
🐟
Multiple Target Species
Bonefish, giant trevally, triggerfish, bluefin trevally, milkfish and more — all in one destination.
🌊
Low Fishing Pressure
Remote location keeps angler numbers low compared to Caribbean fisheries — fish are less wary.
👁
Pure Visual Fishing
Most shots are sight-fishing scenarios in crystal-clear water — you see the fish before you cast.

The Fishing Environment

THE FISHING ENVIRONMENT

The island is surrounded by expansive coral flats, lagoon systems, and ocean-facing edges — creating ideal conditions for a variety of species and fishing styles across 150 square miles of pristine water.

HARD CORAL & SAND FLATS

The flats are predominantly hard coral and sand, allowing anglers to wade safely and comfortably while spotting fish at distance. Water depths range from ankle-deep to waist-deep, with gentle tidal movement influencing fish behaviour and positioning.

This firm footing is one of Christmas Island’s great advantages over Caribbean and Central Pacific Ocean fisheries — you can wade all day without fatigue, covering significant ground and making multiple presentations to multiple schools.

TIDES & FISH MOVEMENT

Tides play a critical role in positioning fish. Incoming tides push bait and crustaceans onto the flats, bringing bonefish and trevally into shallow water. Outgoing tides concentrate fish along edges, channels and dropoffs.

Your guide will plan each day’s fishing around tidal movement — knowing which flat will be productive at what state of tide is the knowledge that separates an expert guide from a passenger. Neap tides produce the clearest, calmest conditions and are highly prized.

EXCEPTIONAL WATER CLARITY

Water clarity on the Christmas Island flats is typically exceptional — among the best of any saltwater fishery in the Pacific. This allows anglers to sight fish effectively, spotting fish at 30–50 feet in good conditions.

Polarised sunglasses are absolutely essential. We recommend copper or brown lenses for the shallow sand flats, and grey or green lenses for deeper lagoon edges. Without quality polarisation, you will miss the majority of fish your guide can see.

THE 150 SQ MILE LAGOON

The inner lagoon at Kiritimati covers 150 square miles of easily wadeable hard white sand coral flats — the largest protected lagoon of any Pacific atoll. This vast, sheltered body of water is the primary fishing ground and holds extraordinary numbers of bonefish, multiple trevally species, and triggerfish.

Christmas Island Lodge provides private boat access to the lagoon, located just 2.5 kilometres from the lodge on the northern edge. This means guests are consistently among the first anglers on the water each morning.

Target Species

TARGET SPECIES

Christmas Island hosts an extraordinary diversity of flats species. Whether your goal is to catch your first bonefish or pursue aggressive giant trevally, this destination offers unmatched variety in a single location.

Christmas Island bonefish Pacific flats
Primary Target
BONEFISH
Average 3–6 lbs · Trophy fish to 10 lbs+
The primary target species and the main reason anglers travel to Christmas Island. Fish here are generally less wary than pressured fisheries, providing excellent opportunities for beginners. Expect multiple shots per session and frequent hook-ups throughout the day.
Christmas Island giant trevally GT Pacific
Trophy Target
GIANT TREVALLY
Common 15–40 kg · Trophy fish to 60 kg
For anglers seeking a challenge, giant trevally offer explosive takes and immense power. GT fishing is often opportunistic — guides will position anglers for shots when fish are sighted cruising the flats or reef edges. The eat is one of the most violent moments in fly fishing.
Christmas Island triggerfish Pacific flats sight fishing
Technical Target
TRIGGERFISH
Titan & Yellow Margin · Highly technical
Highly visual and technical targets requiring precise presentations and genuine patience. Triggerfish are often found tailing in shallow water and are notoriously hard to hook. Landing one on fly is a genuine achievement — Christmas Island offers some of the world’s best trigger fishing.
OTHER SPECIES
Bluefin Trevally
Aggressive and hard-fighting. Often found in mixed schools with GTs on reef edges.
Milkfish (Seasonal)
One of fly fishing’s most demanding targets — rising milkfish in the lagoon are a bucket-list experience.
Barracuda & More
Golden trevally, striped trevally, barracuda and over 125 species await across the reef and lagoon.

A Typical Fishing Day

A TYPICAL DAY
ON THE WATER

A standard fishing day on Christmas Island is structured to maximise time on the flats. Anglers can expect 6–8 hours of fishing per day, with consistent opportunities throughout.

Morning — 7:00am
BREAKFAST & BRIEFING
Lodge breakfast followed by a guide briefing on conditions, tides and target flats for the day. Your guide will have been out at dawn checking water clarity, fish activity and wind direction to pick the best area.
Mid-Morning — 8:30am
DEPART & BEGIN WADING
Depart lodge by boat to your target flat. Begin wading and sight fishing — your guide spots fish first, positions you for a presentation, and coaches your cast and retrieve. Expect multiple shots per hour in good conditions.
Midday — 12:00pm
LUNCH ON THE FLATS
Packed lunch streamside or in shaded areas on the flats. This is not a day that stops for lunch — it stops when the fishing slows, which in peak conditions often isn’t until late afternoon.
Afternoon — 1:00pm+
AFTERNOON FISHING
Continue fishing with focus on changing tidal movement. Afternoon often brings GT action as fish push onto edges chasing bait. Triggerfish are highly active in the mid-afternoon heat when they’re feeding aggressively on the shallower flats.
Evening — 4:30pm
RETURN TO LODGE
Return to lodge, shower, debrief the day with guides and fellow anglers. Cocktails and appetisers in the open-air oceanside lounge while waves crash on the beach. Dinner and plan for the next day. Repeat for six extraordinary days.
When to Go

BEST TIME TO FISH
CHRISTMAS ISLAND

Fishing is available year-round due to Christmas Island’s equatorial location in the Central Pacific Ocean. Certain months offer more stable conditions. Neap tides — occurring every two weeks — produce the clearest, most fishable flats regardless of season.

Gear Guide

FLY FISHING GEAR
GUIDE

Christmas Island is a demanding saltwater environment. Gear selection matters significantly — here’s what Worldwide Angler recommends based on first-hand experience fishing these specific flats.

🎣
BONEFISH SETUP
Rod
9-foot 8-weight or 9-weight — fast action, capable of turning over large flies in wind
Line
Floating tropical fly line — use a line rated for temperatures 75°F and above
Leader
10–12 foot tapered leader, 10–12 lb tippet
Flies
Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, Spawning Shrimp (tan, white, pink) in sizes #4–#8
GT SETUP
Rod
9-foot 11–12 weight minimum — GT will test every component of your setup
Line
Floating or intermediate tropical line. Intermediate for sub-surface presentations on reef edges
Leader
Short, heavy — 50–80 lb fluorocarbon bite section minimum
Flies
Large EP-style baitfish imitations, Rag Heads and surface poppers in white, chartreuse — sizes 3/0–5/0
🛡
ESSENTIAL GEAR
Glasses
Quality polarised sunglasses — non-negotiable. Copper or brown lenses for sand flats
Boots
Rubber-soled wading boots — the coral is abrasive and wading flats without proper boots is painful
Sun
Full sun protection is critical — sun shirt, sun gloves, hat and sunscreen. The equatorial sun is intense
Extras
Wading pack, stripping basket (optional), hook file, salt-proof reel with quality drag
💡 Bring your own gear. While some equipment is available at the lodge, serious anglers should bring a full kit. The salt air, reef and fighting fish are hard on tackle — bring spare leaders, tippet and at least two rods per species target.

TRAVEL LOGISTICS

Travel to Christmas Island (Kiritimati) in the Central Pacific Ocean typically involves flights from Australia via Fiji. Due to the remote location and single weekly flight, planning ahead is essential. This remoteness is precisely what makes the destination extraordinary.

✈️
FLIGHTS FROM AUSTRALIA
Fiji Airways operates the only service to Christmas Island (CXI) from Nadi, Fiji, via connections from Brisbane and Sydney. The flight runs on Tuesdays only — all lodge stays are Tuesday to Tuesday (7 nights). Total travel time from Australia is approximately 8–10 hours. Book flights early — this single weekly service fills quickly during sale periods.
🛂
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Australian passport holders require a visa for entry into Kiribati (Christmas Island is part of the Republic of Kiribati). Visas are available on arrival at Christmas Island airport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Proof of onward travel may be required. No vaccinations are mandated but standard travel health precautions apply.
💱
ON THE GROUND
The Australian Dollar (AUD) is the local currency on Christmas Island and is widely accepted. Credit cards have limited acceptance — bring AUD cash for any personal purchases. The island has limited infrastructure, which directly contributes to its pristine fishing conditions and low angling pressure. Hard alcohol is available for purchase in Honolulu (HNL) and Nadi (NAN) duty-free stores before arrival.
⚠️ Travel Insurance is Essential. With only one flight per week, any disruption has significant consequences. Comprehensive travel and medical evacuation insurance is strongly recommended for every Christmas Island trip. Get covered with Global Rescue →

Insider Tips

INSIDER TIPS

💨
Practice Casting in Wind Before ArrivalThe Trade Winds blow consistently on the Christmas Island flats. The ability to deliver an accurate 60-foot cast in a 15-knot crosswind is the most important skill you can develop before departure.
Focus on Accuracy and SpeedAccurate, quick presentations are critical. Bonefish move fast and won’t wait for a slow cast. Practice tight loops, quick pickups and immediate repositioning — your guide’s timing call is everything.
👂
Listen Closely to Your GuideYour guide will spot fish before you do — every time. Follow their direction immediately, without hesitation. The split second between their call and your cast often determines whether the fish sees the fly.
☀️
Take Sun Protection SeriouslyThe equatorial Pacific sun is intense and unforgiving. Full-coverage sun shirt, buff, hat and reef-safe sunscreen from day one. Sunburn on day one destroys the rest of your trip.
💧
Stay Hydrated on the Flats6–8 hours on the flats in tropical heat requires deliberate hydration. Carry more water than you think you need. Dehydration is the most common cause of poor performance on a Christmas Island trip.
🔗
Check Knots and Leader DailyCoral nicks leaders fast. Check your entire leader and tippet every morning and after each fish. A cut-off from a coral edge is expensive — inspect everything before the first cast each day.
Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes — it is one of the best destinations globally for beginners due to high fish numbers, generally less wary fish, and safe, comfortable wading conditions. High bonefish density ensures multiple shots per session, making it an outstanding learning environment. All skill levels are actively catered for by the expert local guides at Christmas Island Lodge.
Anglers regularly hook multiple fish per day, with some sessions producing significantly higher numbers. Bonefish hook-ups of 10–20+ fish per day are possible in peak conditions. Giant trevally and triggerfish are opportunistic targets — GT fishing depends heavily on fish presence on the day, but chances are consistently high due to strong resident populations.
While some equipment is available at the lodge, bringing your own gear is strongly recommended. Your gear should be setup, tuned and familiar before you arrive — this is not the time to break in a new rod. Bring at least two rods for your primary target species, spare lines and leaders. The coral and hard-fighting fish are demanding on tackle.
No — GT fishing is opportunistic. Giant trevally are sighted, and guides position anglers for presentations when fish appear on the flats or reef edges. However, the chances are high due to the strong GT population at Kiritimati. Most week-long trips produce multiple GT shots, and experienced anglers fishing the right setups connect with fish most weeks.
